CMS's own PECOS system is for providers managing their enrollment and requires a provider login. For everyone else, CMS publishes a public extract of Medicare fee-for-service enrollment records, and that file is checkable by anyone: PECOS Lookup matches any 10-digit NPI against the loaded public file and shows whether an enrollment record is present, with the enrollment ID, provider type, state, and the file's vintage as evidence.

The public file vs CMS's own PECOS system

PECOS itself is Medicare's internal enrollment system. Providers log in to manage their own records; there is no public search inside it. What CMS does publish is a periodic extract of fee-for-service enrollment records — NPI, enrollment ID, provider type, and state — and that public file is what this site loads and checks.

What the enrollment signal does and does not mean

A matching row means a public fee-for-service enrollment record existed as of the file's vintage — that is the whole claim, stated with its evidence.
Enrollment is not participation: participation means agreeing to accept Medicare's approved amount on all claims, and even a non-participating enrolled provider can accept it on a case-by-case basis — none of which the public enrollment file carries.
An enrollment signal is not a promise about any claim: it says nothing about payment or billing privileges for any specific service.
